Therearetwokindsofmodaldistinctions, viz., thatbetweenthemodeproperlyso-calledandthesubstanceofwhichitisamode, , thatwecanclearlyapprehendsubstanceapartfromthemodewhichwesaydiffersfromit; while, ontheotherhand, , forexample, amodaldistinctionbetweenfigureormotionandcorporealsubstanceinwhichbothexist; , asfigureapartfrommotion, andmotionapartfromfigure; , forexample, astoneismoved, andiswithalsquare, wecan, indeed, conceiveitssquarefigurewithoutitsmotion, andreciprocallyitsmotionwithoutitssquarefigure; , orfromthemodeofanothersubstance, asthemotionofonebodyisdifferentfromanotherbodyorfromthemind, orasmotionisdifferentfromdoubt, itseemstomethatitshouldbecalledrealratherthanmodal, becausethesemodescannotbeclearlyconceivedapartfromthereallydistinctsubstancesofwhichtheyarethemodes.

Finally, thedistinctionofreasonisthatbetweenasubstanceandsomeoneofitsattributes, withoutwhichitisimpossible, however, wecanhaveadistinctconceptionofthesubstanceitself; orbetweentwosuchattributesofacommonsubstance, , ifweseparatefromitsuchattribute; , becauseanysubstancewhichceasestoendureceasesalsotoexist, durationisnotdistinctfromsubstanceexceptinthought (RATIONE); andingeneralallthemodesofthinkingwhichweconsiderasinobjectsdifferonlyinthought, aswellfromtheobjectsofwhichtheyarethoughtasfromeachotherinacommonobject.[15]
