Therefore, onewhobecomesaprincethroughthefavourofthepeopleoughttokeepthemfriendly, , inoppositiontothepeople, becomesaprincebythefavourofthenobles, ought, aboveeverything, toseektowinthepeopleovertohimself, , whentheyreceivegoodfromhimofwhomtheywereexpectingevil, areboundmorecloselytotheirbenefactor; thusthepeoplequicklybecomemoredevotedtohimthanifhehadbeenraisedtotheprincipalitybytheirfavours; andtheprincecanwintheiraffectionsinmanyways, butasthesevaryaccordingtothecircumstancesonecannotgivefixedrules, soIomitthem; but, Irepeat, itisnecessaryforaprincetohavethepeoplefriendly, otherwisehehasnosecurityinadversity.

Theseprincipalitiesareliabletodangerwhentheyarepassingfromtheciviltotheabsoluteorderofgovernment, , becauseitrestsentirelyonthegoodwillofthosecitizenswhoareraisedtothemagistracy, andwho, especiallyintroubledtimes, candestroythegovernmentwithgreatease, eitherbyintrigueoropendefiance; andtheprincehasnotthechanceamidtumultstoexerciseabsoluteauthority, becausethecitizensandsubjects, accustomedtoreceiveordersfrommagistrates, arenotofamindtoobeyhimamidtheseconfusions, , whencitizenshaveneedofthestate, becausetheneveryoneagreeswithhim; theyallpromise, andwhendeathisfardistanttheyallwishtodieforhim; butintroubledtimes, whenthestatehasneedofitscitizens, , , andthenhewillalwaysfindthemfaithful.
