That (evenapartfrometymology) cattlearetypicalexamplesofcapitalcannotbedenied ("ProgressandPoverty," p.25); andifweseekforthatparticularqualityofcattlewhichmakesthem "capital," neitherhastheauthorof "ProgressandPoverty" supplied, norisanyoneelseverylikelytosupply, "capital" becausetheyare "stockwhichyieldsrevenue." Thatistosay, , inthisparticularcase, the "revenue" isnotonlydesirable,butofsupremeimportance, -stuffsasmilkandmeat; arevenueofskins;arevenueofmanure; arevenueoflabour; arevenueofexchangeablecommoditiesintheshapeofthesethings, ; and, conversely,thingswhichpossessanyorallofthesecapacitiesarecapital.
Thereforewhatwefindatpage25of "ProgressandPoverty" mustberegardedasawelcomelapseintoclearnessofapprehension:—
"Afertilefield, arichveinofore, afallingstreamwhichsuppliespower, maygivethepossessoradvantagesequivalenttothepossessionofcapital; buttoclasssuchthingsascapitalwouldbetoputanendtothedistinctionbetweenlandandcapital."
